Lost Clash tapes found again 11:47 AEST Sun Aug 15 2004AFP - One of rock 'n' roll's great lost albums, the Vanilla Tapes recorded by punk rockers the Clash in 1979, has been rediscovered, Britain's Independent on Sunday reports. It had long been assumed that the only known copy of the tapes - recorded before the band's seminal album London Calling - had been lost in a London subway train by a drunken roadie who was taking them to a producer. But now, master tapes of the sessions have been found in a cardboard box by the band's guitarist Mick Jones as he prepared to move house, and 21 tracks are to be released for the first time later this year. Jones told the Independent that the tapes - which include five previously unknown songs - give an insight into the Clash as they were about to take their raw brand of politicised British punk to a truly global audience. "They were just sketches, really," he said. "But I'm glad I found them. They tell you quite a lot about what we were like at the time." This year marks the 25th anniversary of the release of London Calling, as well as the second anniversary of the untimely death of the Clash's frontman Joe Strummer.
